PBS Changes My Mind, Again!

When I was a little girl my 3rd grade b.f. Alan gave me a birthday present his mother knew I’d like. It was a recording of the NY Philharmonic Symphony playing Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. It came with a shadow box of an orchestra.

I loved it. Learned the names of instruments from it. Played the recording over and over (we called them records back then).

I never got to see the ballet live, though I did watch it on TV once or twice and found it much too long … the dances were boring and the characters so not 21st or even 20th XX relevant!

So you can imagine that I, a longhaired Tchaikovsky lover, wasn’t rushing to my TV to watch something called The Hip Hop Nutcracker on PBS!!!!

Indeed, I didn’t like it at first, but the music kept me watching. Tchaikovsky with a DJ scratching on vinyl? Oh yeah!!!! Plus the most amazing breakdancing you’ll ever see.

BTW, it will travel around the country: Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbus, Flint … Massacchusets, Texas, California, Washington, Maryland, Florida and more. So you could go online and find one not too far away and have an adventure! (Google Hip Hop Nutcracker for schedule).

BUT IF YOU HAVE GUTS, YOU’LL COME TO BROOKLYN, NY, TO THE KINGS THEATRE ON DEC. 15TH, AND BE PART OF A WILD NYC AUDIENCE!

WOW – that’s cool! I have a dear friend who’s son lives in NYC and is a dancer and performer for musicals. I wonder if he’ll be in that one? I hope you get to go to it!!

I doubt I’ll get there … but seeing it on TV was a thrill. Wish I had a bigger screen! I bet your friend’s son has heard of it, for sure. It raised break-dancing to become an unquestionable art form … which it’s been threatening to do at for quite a while, but this leaves no doubt about it at all!
