Spring Wins…

During these frightening days, writers lean back on Nature the way a young girl

might slide gently down to rest on a mossy mound in the woods. Our minds reach

for analogies but there is nothing in the human-created world to answer our need.

Instead we must turn to Nature. We have the facts, but so many of them are troubling,

so very troubling. Mystery is what we hunger for and Nature will always remain the

greatest mystery ever told, no matter how many illustrated notebooks turn up in the

bows of the HMS Beagles or how many times we bring an all-powerful Creator into the

picture frame. Nature defies all attempts to account for it.

So we are reaching back into spring, letting the butterfly steal our eyes away

from white masks, letting the raspberry-colored leaves wind themselves around

our hearts until we hear, but no longer recognize, the siren in the background.

  1. Beautifully written. “…wind themselves around our hearts…” – wow. Nature is perhaps our last best refuge in this new world – with her mysteries not triggering fear. I am more than happy to let spring win.
I hope you are okay and weathering this storm safely.
